Actions of the brain’s γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) system. After chronic alcohol exposure and during withdrawal, GABA activity at the synapse is reduced, leading to reduced inhibition of the postsynaptic neuron. This results in development of anxiety and hyperexcitability.
