National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)

NIAAA Scientific Review Group Rosters

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism Initial Review Group (IRG) reviews grant and cooperative agreement applications and contract proposals for research projects and for research and training activities in areas of clinical, treatment, and health services research, and in the areas of biochemistry, physiology, and medicine. NIAAA Study Sections and Special Emphasis Panels meetings are closed in accordance with the provisions set forth in sections 552b(c)(4) and 552b(c)(6), Title 5 U.S. Code, as amended.

The NIAAA IRG currently includes the following study sections and special emphasis panel:

  • Biomedical Research Study Section (AA-1)
  • Epidemiology, Prevention and Behavior Research Study Section (AA-2)
  • Clinical, Treatment and Health Services Research Review Study Section (AA-3)
  • Neuroscience and Behavior Study Section (AA-4)
  • Individual Fellowship Review Special Emphasis Panel (ZAA1)

► Schedule of Scientific Review Group Meetings

BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH STUDY SECTION (AA-1)

The Biomedical Research Study Section reviews applications that focus on the etiology and consequences of alcohol abuse and alcoholism relating to basic biomedical research, excluding neuroscience research. Specific research areas include the effects of alcohol on membranes, intermediary metabolism, bioenergetics, gene expression, enzyme activity, endocrinology, genetics, interactions between alcohol and the immune system, and organ (except brain) function and pathology. Assignments to this Subcommittee also include applications that deal with studies of the relationship between alcohol and other addictive agents involving all organs, except neuroscience-related research.

EPIDEMIOLOGY, PREVENTION AND BEHAVIOR RESEARCH STUDY SECTION (AA-2)

The Epidemiology, Prevention and Behavior Research Study Section reviews applications on alcohol-related epidemiologic studies, prevention and consequences of a wide range of behaviors.   In addition, this subcommittee reviews multidisciplinary perspectives and community factors in general or well-defined populations covering all age-ranges who are at risk for alcohol abuse.

CLINICAL, TREATMENT AND HEALTH SERVICES RESEARCH STUDY SECTION (AA-3)

The Clinical, Treatment and Health Services Research Study Section reviews research grant applications that focus on the process, outcome, evaluation and clinical assessment of treatment for alcoholism, alcohol abuse and alcohol-related disorders. The subcommittee specifically reviews research on the clinical and behavioral aspects of pharmacological issues, early and brief interventions, consumption measurements, methodology and experimental designs, clinical populations, diagnostic procedures, therapy assessments, primary care, co-morbidity, behavioral and molecular genetics, and cognitive and neurological issues.   Assignments to this Subcommittee also include grant applications, which examine the effectiveness of treatment as they are implemented in everyday practice settings, and investigate how organizational and financial factors affect accessibility, utilization, quality, costs, and outcomes of alcohol services.
