According to the 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 228.4 million people ages 12 and older (79.2% in this age group) reported that they drank alcohol at some point in their lifetime.1,2 This includes:

Emerging Trend—High-Intensity Drinking

High-intensity drinking is defined as consuming alcohol at levels that are two or more times the sex-specific binge drinking thresholds (see glossary for additional details about the definition of high-intensity drinking). Compared with people who did not binge drink, people who drank alcohol at twice the sex-specific binge drinking thresholds were 70 times more likely to have an alcohol-related emergency department visit, and those who consumed alcohol at three times the sex-specific binge thresholds were 93 times more likely to have an alcohol-related emergency department visit.11

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), many (but not all) NSDUH estimates from 2024 are comparable with estimates from 2022, 2023, and updated 2021 estimates. However, 2021–2024 estimates are not comparable with 2020 or prior years' estimates.
