Dr. Paule Joseph Selected as Lasker Clinical Research Scholar in NINR/NIAAA Intramural Research Program

Dr. Paule V. Joseph has been selected as a Lasker Clinical Research Scholar at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This highly competitive program provides talented, early-stage researchers the opportunity to carry out independent clinical and translational research for five to seven years at NIH. The researchers also have the possibility of additional years of financial support, at NIH or an NIH-funded research institution. 

Dr. Joseph, a scientist in the Division of Intramural Research at the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), will serve as a Lasker Clinical Research Scholar with a joint appointment with the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).  Dr. Paule Joseph

Dr. Joseph’s research focuses on the relationship between disturbances in sensory systems and disease. This includes individual and addiction-induced differences in thresholds and responses to olfactory and gustatory cues, and changes in pain perception. At NIAAA, Dr. Joseph’s clinical research collaborators include Dr. Nancy Diazgranados (NIAAA Office of Clinical Director), Dr. Reza Momenan (NIAAA Clinical NeuroImaging Research Core), Dr. David Goldman (NIAAA Office of Clinical Director), Dr. Nora Volkow (NIAAA Laboratory of Neuroimaging), and Dr. Lorenzo Leggio (Section on Clinical Psychoneuroendocrinology and Neuropsychopharmacology), with whom she is working to develop deep sensory phenotyping of patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) participating in studies at the NIH Clinical Center.

Dr. Joseph received her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and conducted her dissertation work at the Monell Chemical Senses Center. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the NINR Division of Intramural Research. In 2017, she was appointed as Assistant Clinical Investigator and Chief of the Sensory Science and Metabolism Unit (SenSMet) in the NINR Division of Intramural Research. Dr. Joseph has a Master’s of Science as Family Nurse Practitioner from Pace University. In addition, she obtained an AAS in Nursing at Hostos Community College and a BSN from the College of New Rochelle. She is a fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine and an international Transcultural Nurse Fellow.
